چکیده

We analyze distributed optimization algorithms where parts of data and variables are distributed over several machines and synchronization occurs asynchronously. We prove convergence for the general case of a nonconvex objective plus a convex and possibly nonsmooth penalty. We demonstrate two challenging applications, `1-regularized logistic regression and reconstruction ICA, and present experiments on real datasets with billions of variables using both CPUs and GPUs.

An Asynchronous Distributed Proximal Gradient Method for Composite Convex Optimization

We propose a distributed first-order augmented Lagrangian (DFAL) algorithm to minimize the sum of composite convex functions, where each term in the sum is a private cost function belonging to a node, and only nodes connected by an edge can directly communicate with each other. This optimization model abstracts a number of applications in distributed sensing and machine learning. We show that a...

An Accelerated Gradient Method for Distributed Multi-Agent Planning with Factored MDPs

We study optimization for collaborative multi-agent planning in factored Markov decision processes (MDPs) with shared resource constraints. Following past research, we derive a distributed planning algorithm for this setting based on Lagrangian relaxation: we optimize a convex dual function which maps a vector of resource prices to a bound on the achievable utility. Since the dual function is n...

Distributed Methods for Constrained Nonconvex Multi-Agent Optimization-Part I: Theory

In this two-part paper, we propose a general algorithmic framework for the minimization of a nonconvex smooth function subject to nonconvex smooth constraints. The algorithm solves a sequence of (separable) strongly convex problems and mantains feasibility at each iteration. Convergence to a stationary solution of the original nonconvex optimization is established. Our framework is very general...

Incremental Gradient, Subgradient, and Proximal Methods for Convex Optimization: A Survey

We survey incremental methods for minimizing a sum ∑m i=1 fi(x) consisting of a large number of convex component functions fi. Our methods consist of iterations applied to single components, and have proved very effective in practice. We introduce a unified algorithmic framework for a variety of such methods, some involving gradient and subgradient iterations, which are known, and some involvin...

Towards Feature Selection in Networks

Traditional feature selection methods assume that the data are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.). In real world, tremendous amounts of data are distributed in a network. Existing features selection methods are not suited for networked data because the i.i.d. assumption no longer holds. This motivates us to study feature selection in a network. In this paper, we present a supervis...
